Empowering Newcomers: Wethouder's Educational Visits Foster Inclusivity and Growth

Enhancing Education for Young Immigrants

Wethouder Jim van den Hoorn and policy advisor Wilma Posthouwer embarked on a meaningful journey on March 5 and 7 to the ISK in Harderwijk and the Taalklas at De Pelikaan primary school in Putten. These spaces serve as educational havens for young newcomers to the Netherlands, offering them a unique opportunity to learn and grow.

ISK, a Melting Pot of Diversity and Learning

At the ISK in Harderwijk, Wethouder Van den Hoorn engaged with Wilbert Leendertse and Liset Sewuster, who passionately shared insights about their school. This institution not only imparts language skills but also fosters a community where young individuals aged 12 to 18, representing over 23 nationalities, learn and evolve together.

The ISK transcends traditional education to instill values of respect, understanding, and interpersonal connections. It's a place where students, some of whom have never experienced formal education before, hone not just academic knowledge but vital life skills essential for their future.

Embracing Cultural Integration at Taalklas

Meanwhile, at the Taalklas in De Pelikaan, the children's voices echoed with hope and enthusiasm as they sang and introduced themselves. Catering to kids from different countries in grades 3 to 8 who have recently arrived in the Netherlands, this setting acts as a nurturing ground for cultural adaptation and language proficiency.

Marja van Roekel, the school's director, emphasized the importance of a supportive environment and the blend of different age groups, enriching the learning experience. The Taalklas not only teaches the Dutch language but also bridges the cultural gap, preparing children for a seamless transition to mainstream education.

These visits not only highlight the commitment of local authorities to invest in the educational well-being of newcomers but also underscore the essence of unity and empathy in creating a harmonious community for all.
